This is the poster for Dunkirk, this film is about the evacuation of British soldiers from the battle of Dunkirk during the second world war. The first thing we can see about this poster is the colour pallette and how it consists of blue hues. There is almost no other colour than blue in this poster, this shows the bleak atmosphere of this battle and represents the how the world felt during this period. Using the Z-Rule we can see the previous films the critically acclaimed director has made, this lets the viewer know what to expect quality wise with the film. The mid section of the poster features a lone soldier overlooking the chaos, this image seems almost peaceful due to it's melancholic colour scheme and lack of audio. The lone soldier is standing in front of the sea which could be symbolism for the journey into the unknown as the ocean is the most unexplored part of the world. The soldier by himself could represent the audience as they are about to watch this realistic dep...

To attract audiences to watch your film, many marketing practices are used to promote the film. To market our film, we are creating a poster that will show what the film will involve whilst also looking attractive and atmospheric. This is the poster for the film arrival. This film is about the arrival of aliens to earth and the process of asking the question "What is your purpose here?" The film is a Sci-Fi Thriller and I think this poster does a great job at representing the general atmosphere of the film. The poster takes place in the location that most of the film is set in. The imagery of the location shows the alien spaceship in the centre with a helicopter flying towards the spaceship. By using the "Z rule" we can see that the poster shows all of it's most important information and imagery in accordance to this rule. The actor's names appear at the top and this allows the viewer to see who is in the film first before they read the rest of the poste...

When coming up with a film idea, inspiration is key to finding the style of the film we want to make. I am going to analyse short films with intent to take certain aspects and apply them to the production of our short film. 1500 WORDS SYNOPSIS- When Stanley Franks is told he has 1500 words left to live, he faces a battle to keep both his marriage and himself alive using the fewest words possible. This short film is a dark comedy that takes place in a grounded, realistic world. Unlike a lot of films, 1500 words is narrated by a disembodied voice that is never established, this is reminiscent of story books that are told to children, this gives the film a somewhat childish tone which is contrasted by the dark humour being portrayed. The opening of the film shows the main concept of the story, it shows a counter, counting down to 1500. This title fades into the first shot of the film, which takes place in a doctors office. This is a birds eye view o...
Fever Narrative Analysis - Inspiration

Fever Analysis Fever is a short film which shows a day in the lives of four teenagers. This day in their lives is shown to be a normal day until a sudden ‘fever’ takes over causing them to act spontaneously. The ‘fever’ acts differently on each of the teens, some act in confidence others act in nervousness and this allows the audience to empathise and sympathise with the characters. Fever begins by showing the characters getting ready for the day/night ahead, this introduction is one that the audience can relate to as everybody has to get ready. This makes the characters in the film more organic and relatable. Throughout this beginning the film cuts between shots of the teens at a fast pace, these cuts show that the narrative is not focu sing on any one specific character. The characters all have equal screen time which paints them as all equal even though they are different in many ways such as race, religion, social status and social class. Each character is from a d...
Larry Analysis Film Inspiration

Larry is a 5 minute short horror film about a parking lot attendant on his night shift, due to his boredom he looks in the lost and found and finds an iPad with a mysterious Ebook on it. Larry is unlike many short films as it takes place in one specific place, has almost no dialogue and has a small cast, this is very effective as it creates a very intimate experience with the audience. Larry opens with a long shot of a car park at night, there is only one car with a lamp post highlighting the car. In the foreground of the shot there are window dividers, these seem to represent prison bars as if the audience is trapped in a claustrophobic area looking out at their one form of escape, the car. An unknown character's arm appears in front of the camera confirming that this is a POV shot. The watch displays 3:01, this is very late in the night and a common convention to making the audience feel more vulnerable as the quiet night creates a sense of dread. As the arm comes int...
Representation in Red Five

Representation refers to the construction in any medium of aspects of reality therefore representation can be applied to our short film Red Five. At the time of producing the film we did not have much knowledge of representation theory so we did not plan for representation theory to appear in the film but it still can be applied due to common conventions in storytelling and filmmaking. We did understand the definitions of convention and stereotype and we tried to combat how these words are perceived in Red Five’s genre. One of the first instances of representation that the audience can see is the representation of social groups. In Red Five the audience can detect representations of age, gender and nationality. The age of the main characters is the most noticeable as it is one of the first physical things that the audience can uncover, in Red Five the first character shown, Noah, is shown to be around the age of 16, this can be seen by how Noah dresses, how he speaks and by how he ...
